The Tree Inside Your Heart
Why does Allah love people who learn? What is this science called theology, and why should we care about it? And why does the Qur'an say that faith is like a big, beautiful tree?
Faith and Belief — Chapter 1 of 7
The Tree Inside Your Heart
Let us begin a brand new journey.
This journey is about the biggest questions a person can ask. Who made me? Why am I here? Who is Allah? What happens after I die? These are not small questions. They are the questions that decide how you live your whole life.
But before we can answer them, we have to talk about something Allah loves very much. Knowledge.
Allah loves the ones who learn
Allah tells us in the Qur’an that He will raise up the people who believe, and He will raise even higher the people who have knowledge. Think about that. Allah wants you to learn. He wants you to ask questions. He wants you to wonder and think and understand.
Go all the way back to the very first human, Adam, peace be upon him. When Allah made Adam, the angels were puzzled. They asked, why make this new creature? And Allah said, “I know what you do not know.” Then Allah taught Adam something the angels did not have. He taught him the names of things. He taught him how to speak, how to know, how to understand.
That was the gift. Not big muscles. Not sharp claws. Knowledge. That is how Allah honored our father Adam. So knowledge is close to Allah’s heart.
The Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, told us something amazing. He said that when Allah wants good for a person, He gives that person understanding of the religion. Picture that. If you feel a little pull in your heart that says, “I want to learn about my Lord,” that pull is a good sign. It is a gift. It might mean Allah wants good for you.
Knowledge that keeps giving after you are gone
Here is a wonder. When a person dies, almost everything they did comes to a stop. No more prayers. No more good deeds. The pen is lifted.
But the Prophet ﷺ told us that three things keep going even after death. A charity that keeps helping people. A righteous child who prays for you. And knowledge that you taught, that people keep using.
So if you learn something good and pass it on, and that person passes it on, and they pass it on, you keep collecting reward while you are resting in your grave. Knowledge is a river that never dries up.
So what is “theology”?
Now we come to the reason for this whole series.
“Theology” is just a fancy old word that means “the study of God.” In our tradition we have an Arabic name for it. We call the science of belief aqeedah. The word aqeedah comes from a word that means to tie a firm knot. Why? Because your beliefs tie you down and hold you steady. What you believe about your Creator, about right and wrong, about what happens after death, that is what shapes the real you.
And here is a truth that is true for everybody, not just Muslims. What you believe on the inside shapes what you do on the outside. Always. If someone truly believes that Allah is watching, they will not cheat, even when no police officer is near. If someone truly believes there is a Day of Judgment, they will not step on the weak, even when they could get away with it.
Belief comes first. Actions follow. That is why we start here.
The parable of the beautiful tree
Now for the most beautiful part. Allah gives us a picture in the Qur’an, and once you see it, you will never forget it.
Allah asks, have you not seen how Allah gives the example of a good word, like a good tree? Its roots are deep in the ground, and its branches reach high into the sky. It gives its fruit season after season, by the permission of its Lord.
Faith is that tree. Let us walk around it and look.
A tree means life. What is the first thing you learn in science class? Photosynthesis. The tree breathes in the air we cannot use and breathes out the air we need to live. Without trees, there would be no life on earth. Allah is saying your faith is like that. It is the thing that keeps your soul alive. A person without faith is breathing, yes, but something inside has gone quiet.
The roots go deep. Deep roots keep a tree standing when the storm comes. And storms do come. Hard days. Sad days. Days when you lose something you love. The person with deep faith stands firm, like a strong old tree. The person with no roots gets blown around by every little wind, never sure where they are going.
The branches reach the sky. Faith lifts you up. It raises you in this world and the next. And a tall tree gives shade. People come and sit under it and feel safe. A person of real faith is like that too. Others come to them for comfort.
And the fruit? Oh, the fruit. This is not a tree with only one kind of fruit. The tree of faith gives many gifts, and it gives them for free. Peace in your heart. Courage when you are scared. A good and calm life, not because you are rich, but because you are full on the inside. And the greatest fruit of all, saved for the end, waits in Paradise. It is the gift of looking upon the face of your Lord. There is no gift higher than that one.
So this is where we begin. Not with rules. Not with lists. We begin by planting a tree.
Learn about your Lord, and the roots go deeper. Act on what you learn, and the branches climb higher. Keep at it, season after season, and one day you will taste the fruit.
Your heart has room for a tree like this. Go on. Let it grow.
