What Does It Mean to Succeed?
The world has one idea of who is 'successful.' The Qur'an has a very different one. In one beautiful passage, Allah tells us exactly who the truly successful people are — and it might surprise you.
Qur'an - The Big Picture — Chapter 5 of 8
What Does It Mean to Succeed?
Let me ask you a question. Who do you think is a successful person?
If you asked lots of people, you might hear answers like these: someone rich, with piles of money. Someone famous, whom everybody knows. Someone with a huge house, a fast car, and lots of followers. The world often measures success like that — by how much you have and how many people are looking at you.
But the Qur’an looks at success in a completely different way. And once you see it, you may never think about “success” the same way again.
“The Believers Have Truly Succeeded”
There is a surah in the Qur’an called Surah Al-Mu’minun, which means “The Believers.” And it opens with a wonderful announcement. Allah says: “The believers have truly succeeded.”
Stop and notice something. Allah does not say “the richest people have succeeded,” or “the most famous,” or “the ones with the most toys.” He says the believers have succeeded — the people whose hearts are connected to Him.
And then Allah does something lovely. He gives us a list. He describes exactly what these successful believers are like, so we can know them — and so we can try to be like them. It is almost like a treasure map to a good life. Let us look at what is on it.
The Checklist of the Truly Successful
Here are the qualities Allah lists for the people who have truly succeeded:
They are humble in their prayer. When they stand before Allah to pray, they are not just moving their bodies while their minds wander off. Their hearts are soft, calm, and truly present with Allah. (This one is so important that we will spend the whole next chapter on it.)
They turn away from useless, empty talk. They do not waste their time on silly, mean, or pointless chatter — gossiping, arguing over nothing, saying hurtful things. They keep their words good and their time valuable.
They give to others. They share what they have with people in need. Part of being successful, Allah says, is a generous, open hand — helping the poor and giving for His sake.
They keep themselves pure and modest. They stay clean and good, careful about how they behave, protecting themselves from things that are wrong.
They keep their promises and their trusts. If they say they will do something, they do it. If someone trusts them with a secret or a task or a belonging, they take care of it faithfully. They are people you can count on.
They guard their prayers. They do not just pray when they happen to feel like it. They protect their prayers, keeping them on time, day after day, like a treasure they will not let slip.
The Prize at the End
After this beautiful list, Allah tells us what these successful people will receive. He says they are the inheritors — the ones who will inherit the highest level of Paradise, a place called Firdaus, where they will stay forever.
Think about that. In the world’s game, the prize for “success” is money or fame that you leave behind the moment you die. But in Allah’s eyes, the prize for real success is Firdaus — the most beautiful home at the very top of Paradise, forever, near Allah.
A New Way to See
Do you see how different this is?
Not one thing on Allah’s list is about being rich, or famous, or owning lots of stuff. Every single thing is about your heart and your character — how you pray, how you speak, how you treat people, how trustworthy you are.
And here is the wonderful part: that means success is open to everyone. You do not need to be rich or famous to be one of the truly successful. A quiet, kind, honest, prayerful child can be far more successful in Allah’s eyes than the richest, most famous person on earth.
So the next time you wonder whether someone is really “successful” — including yourself — do not measure it the way the world does. Measure it the way Allah does. Ask: Is the heart humble in prayer? Are the words kind? Is the hand generous? Are the promises kept?
That is real success. And every one of us can reach for it, starting today.
