Allah Is Greater Than That
We open every prayer with two small words: Allahu Akbar. But there is a blank hidden inside them that you get to fill in yourself. And after that, the Prophet ﷺ taught us to whisper an opening supplication. Here are three of them: a prayer to be washed clean, a prayer that lifts Allah high above all wealth and power, and a promise to hand your whole self over to Him.
Chapter 4
Cling to Him, Then Bow to Him
Before we read Allah's words, we run to Him for protection from a relentless enemy. Then, after al-Fatihah, we fold into the most off-balance position in the whole prayer and call Allah the most unshakable One of all. Here is the meaning of the isti'adha, the bismillah, and the ruku'.

He'll Never Ask More Than You Can Give
The last three verses of Surah al-Baqarah are one of the great gifts of the Qur'an, a light sent down from heaven. They begin with everything belonging to Allah, and they end with the most comforting promise of all: He will never, ever burden you with more than you can carry.

I Bear Witness
In the middle of the tashahhud comes the greatest sentence a person can ever say. You become a witness, standing up and declaring two truths: that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and His messenger. And the order of those words hides something beautiful.
Chapter 5
Rise with Praise, Sit and Ask
When you stand up from ruku', you say that Allah hears you, and that praise belongs to Him alone. Then, in the tiny sit between the two sajdahs, the Prophet ﷺ gave us a small prayer that asks for almost everything a person could ever need.
Chapter 8
Sending Love to the Prophet
Right after we testify, we send peace and blessings on the Prophet ﷺ. It is called the durood. We ask Allah to pour His special mercy on the man who gave us everything, and, quietly, this prayer folds every one of us into it too.
Chapter 9
The Prayer Doesn't End at the Salam
When we turn our heads and say the salam, the prayer is finished, but the experience is not. The Prophet ﷺ taught us a handful of words to say right after: asking forgiveness for our wobbly prayer, remembering that Allah is the source of all peace, and counting a hundred little lights to carry into the day.

We say the words salah, khushu', and zikr all the time, but what do they really mean? One is the name of the prayer, and it hides five pictures inside it. Near the end of the prayer, we sit and say the tashahhud. It begins by handing every kind of honor and goodness to Allah, and then it sends peace out in widening circles, to the Prophet ﷺ, to us, and to every good soul who ever lived.
