Deir Yassin, and the Emptied Cities
In April 1948 a village near Jerusalem was destroyed in a way that was meant to be heard about, and it was heard about. Within six weeks Tiberias, Haifa, Jaffa, Safed and Acre had emptied. This chapter does not soften what happened, because softening it is how it gets forgotten.
Chapter 9
What Happened to the People
The war ended and 750,000 people were still standing outside. A UN mediator wrote that they had a right to go home, and was shot dead the next day. This is what became of the refugees, of the villages, of the ones who stayed, and of a word that has never stopped meaning what it means.
