Allah's Words
The Qur'an is not just a book — it is the actual speech of Allah. Let us meet it as speech, learn what a surah and an ayah are, and discover why the word 'ayah' is one of the most beautiful words of all.
Allah's Words — Chapter 1 of 7
Allah’s Words
Let us begin a new journey — and this one is about words.
Not ordinary words. In this little book we are going to look closely at the most amazing words in the whole world: the words of the Qur’an. Muslims believe the Qur’an is the actual speech of Allah, our Creator. And when you slow down and really look at it, you find something wonderful. Every word is chosen perfectly. Nothing is by accident. It is beautiful in ways that no human being could ever copy.
That is what we are going to explore together — the hidden beauty inside Allah’s words.
First, It Was Spoken
Here is something many people do not know.
The Qur’an did not first arrive as a book you could hold. It first arrived as speech — words that were said out loud. The very word Qur’an means “the recitation,” something read and said again and again.
Allah sent these words to the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam — that beautiful phrase means “may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him,” and from now on we will write it as this small sign: ﷺ. The words came to him a little at a time, over about twenty-three years, brought down by the angel Jibril (Gabriel). The Prophet ﷺ would hear them, say them, and teach them. People memorised them in their hearts and wrote them down. Only later were they gathered into the book we hold today.
So when you read the Qur’an, remember: you are reading words that were spoken — living words, meant to be heard and felt, not just seen on a page.
Surahs and Ayahs
The Qur’an is made of pieces, and the pieces have names. Let us learn two of them.
A surah is like a chapter. There are 114 surahs in the Qur’an. Some are long, some are just a few short lines.
Inside each surah are ayahs. You can think of an ayah as a verse — a line or a small group of words. But the word “ayah” is far more beautiful than just “verse,” and that is our first little treasure.
The Most Beautiful Word: Ayah
In Arabic, the word ayah does not only mean “a line in a book.” It carries many beautiful meanings all at once. Let us taste a few of them:
An ayah is something valuable — a treasure worth keeping.
An ayah is something that makes you curious — it makes you want to look closer.
An ayah is something amazing — it fills you with wonder.
An ayah is a way of getting your attention — like a gentle tap on the shoulder that says, “Look here.”
And most of all, an ayah is a sign — a signpost that points you toward Allah.
Is that not lovely? So when Allah calls each line of the Qur’an an ayah, He is telling us: this is not just writing. Each line is a treasure, a wonder, a gentle sign pointing your heart back to the One who made you.
And here is something even more amazing. Allah calls other things “ayahs” too — the sun, the moon, the mountains, the rain, a tiny seed becoming a tree, even your own beating heart. All of these are signs pointing to Allah. So the Qur’an is full of ayahs, and the whole world around you is full of ayahs too. Once you learn to see them, you find them everywhere.
Why We Look So Closely
You might wonder: why spend time looking so carefully at single words?
Because these are Allah’s words. When someone you love writes you a letter, you do not read it in a rush and throw it away. You read it slowly. You notice every word. You think, “Why did they say it just like this?”
The Qur’an is a letter of guidance and love from Allah to us. It was given in a rich, deep language called classical Arabic — a language so careful that a single word can hold a whole world of meaning. Even when we read it in English, we can still catch the sparkle of that beauty. That is what this book will help you do: to slow down, look closely, and say “Subhan Allah — how perfect these words are.”
Do not worry about knowing lots of Arabic. We will only pick up a few gentle words here and there, like picking up shiny stones on a beach. The goal is simple: to fall a little more in love with Allah’s words.
Our Journey Ahead
In the chapters ahead we will discover beautiful sayings that paint pictures in your mind. We will see how much Allah loves to give. We will learn about the heart, and how to keep it soft. We will marvel at how perfectly the whole Qur’an is designed. And we will end with a real conversation from long ago — a conversation between a brave prophet and a cruel king — told in Allah’s own words.
So get ready. We are about to look closely at the most beautiful words ever spoken — and let them speak to our hearts.
